The Shade Tree Commission of Cranford has named the Zelkova tree as September's Tree of the Month. This non-native tree belongs to the elm family and was originally planted as a replacement for elms due to its resistance to Dutch Elm Disease. However, it has the potential to be invasive in the Northeast.

To maintain the ecological balance, the Shade Tree Commission advises against planting Zelkova trees. They suggest removing existing Zelkova trees and replacing them with native alternatives like American Elm, Tulip Tree, Red Maple, Black Gum, Eastern Redbud, or Serviceberry.
